From LinkedIn Posts to National Authority: Tim Semelroth’s Brand-Building Playbook for Lawyers
Welcome to Market Movers: Building Brands & Links with Linkifi! Your go-to podcast for transforming your business into an unforgettable brand, where branding meets SEO and link-building. I’m Chris Panteli, Co-Founder and CEO of Linkifi, and I’m joined by my co-host and Co-Founder, Nick Biggs.
In this episode, we’re joined by Tim Semelroth, a partner at RSH Legal, Iowa’s largest injury and disability law firm. Tim breaks down the marketing systems behind the firm’s growth, including why attorney referrals generate an outsized share of revenue, how LinkedIn feeds a multi-channel content flywheel, why staying top of mind matters more than ever, and how AI search is increasing the value of expertise, credentials and original content.
Key Talking Points
✅ Three Main Sources of New Cases. Roughly 25% of RSH Legal’s cases come from attorney referrals, 50% from general marketing, and 25% from past clients and other word-of-mouth relationships.
✅ 25% of Cases Generate 50% of Revenue. Lawyer referrals represent only about a quarter of the firm’s caseload but account for approximately half of its revenue, making professional referrals one of its most valuable growth channels.
✅ Build a Reputation Beyond Your Local Market. As a board-certified truck accident lawyer, Tim wants attorneys anywhere in the United States to think of him when someone needs legal representation in Iowa.
✅ LinkedIn Is Built Around Other Lawyers, Not Consumers. Tim’s content strategy asks one question: will another lawyer find this interesting, educational or entertaining? The immediate audience is potential referral partners rather than injury clients.
✅ One Post Becomes a Multi-Channel Content Flywheel. Strong LinkedIn posts are repurposed into a twice-monthly email newsletter, and the highest-performing material can then become a monthly print newsletter mailed to every practicing lawyer in Iowa.
✅ Even Competitors Are Valuable Audiences. Other injury lawyers may still refer cases because of conflicts, companion cases or specialist requirements. Tim believes it pays to remain visible to both collaborators and competitors.
✅ Marketing Also Supports Recruitment. RSH Legal receives employment inquiries from lawyers who see its marketing and interpret a strong public presence as evidence of a healthy, professionally run firm.
✅ You Cannot Take Your Foot Off the Gas. Podcasts, LinkedIn, newsletters and other authority-building activities compound over time, but Tim stresses that brands need to keep publishing if they want to remain top of mind.
✅ Every Lawyer Has to Do a Monthly Tim Talk. Tim regularly records conversations with attorneys at the firm about recent cases, frequently asked questions and new lessons, then turns those conversations into short-form video and website content.
✅ Human Expertise Creates More Durable Content. Rather than relying entirely on AI-generated material, the firm captures genuine conversations with practicing lawyers, creating original content grounded in actual experience.
✅ Credentials Matter More in AI Search. Tim sees certifications, specialist expertise and inclusion in the right directories becoming increasingly important because AI platforms use those signals when deciding which individual lawyers to recommend.
✅ AI Is Not Protected by Attorney-Client Privilege. Tim warns that people should be extremely careful about discussing legal problems with AI tools because those conversations may potentially become discoverable during litigation.
