Digital PR Is Broken. Authority PR Is Taking Over

Welcome to Market Movers: Building Brands & Links with Linkifi! Your go-to podcast for transforming your business into an unforgettable brand, where branding meets SEO and link-building. I’m Chris Panteli, Co-Founder and CEO of Linkifi, and I’m joined by my co-host and Co-Founder, Nick Biggs.

In this special episode, Chris and Nick explore why Linkifi has moved away from many traditional digital PR campaigns and shifted towards authority PR. They discuss the decline of low-quality outbound campaigns, the difference between earning a backlink and appearing live on the BBC, CNBC, or Bloomberg, and how businesses can build the credibility needed to become trusted media experts.

Key Talking Points

Why Traditional Digital PR Has Lost Effectiveness. Digital PR became increasingly crowded with gimmicky campaigns, loosely connected brand stories, and mass outreach. As more agencies adopted the same tactics, journalists became overwhelmed by repetitive and low-value pitches.

The Rise of AI-Generated PR Campaigns. AI tools have made it easier to create and distribute campaigns quickly. However, greater volume has not necessarily produced better stories, and journalists are increasingly tired of receiving generic AI-generated pitches.

When Outbound Campaigns Can Still Work. Chris and Nick explain that outbound digital PR still has value when a company possesses meaningful internal data, a recognizable industry presence, or a genuinely newsworthy angle.

Why Strong Data Matters. The most successful campaigns often involve original data or highly creative interpretations of third-party information. The headline, positioning, analysis, and relevance of the story are what make the campaign attractive to journalists.

Why Hyperlocal PR Still Works. Commenting on proposed laws, developments, community issues, and other local stories can still generate valuable coverage, particularly when the topic is directly relevant to the company’s expertise.

What Authority PR Means. Authority PR is not primarily focused on securing a backlink. Its purpose is to place a person or company in front of the right audience and establish them as a credible expert on the subjects they want to be known for.

Digital PR Versus Traditional PR. Digital PR usually treats the link as the main objective. Traditional PR prioritizes media coverage, reputation, narrative control, interviews, opinion pieces, contributor opportunities, and long-term authority.

The Trade-Off Required for Tier-One Links. Companies with less media-friendly services may need to speak about broader topics to earn links from major publications. When the only goal is the backlink, brands often sacrifice topical relevance and control over how they are presented.

Why Major Media Coverage Takes Time. Most people will not secure a live Bloomberg or BBC interview immediately. Businesses generally need to establish credibility through smaller features, podcasts, local news appearances, written interviews, and opinion pieces first.

Building Multiple Media Narratives. Businesses should not depend on one narrow subject. A company may have a core business narrative alongside broader themes involving AI, remote work, affordability, industry trends, regulation, or consumer behavior.

Using Several Spokespeople. Larger businesses do not always need to rely on the founder or CEO. Different experts can represent different parts of the company and speak about subjects that match their credentials and experience.

Building Credibility Step by Step. Early opportunities with niche or tier-two publications create proof that the spokesperson can communicate effectively. That coverage can then be used when approaching larger media outlets.

Why Podcasts and Local News Matter. Major television producers want to know that a guest can speak clearly, respond under pressure, and hold an audience’s attention. Previous podcast appearances and smaller interviews provide evidence that the person is ready.

Why Repeat Coverage Is Valuable. Chris and Nick reject the idea that a brand no longer benefits from a publication after receiving one link. Repeated appearances demonstrate expertise and build trust with readers, search engines, journalists, and AI platforms.

Contributor Accounts as a Major PR Win. Becoming a regular contributor to an important industry publication can be more valuable than earning one isolated backlink. It positions the person as an established voice within the market.

Authority PR and AI Visibility. AI systems evaluate signals from publications, reviews, expert commentary, and other trusted sources. Repeated appearances around a specific subject can help establish a brand or spokesperson as an authority.

Building a Competitive Moat. Many companies are still focused almost entirely on Google rankings and individual links. Businesses that begin building a strong media profile now may establish an advantage that competitors will find difficult to replicate.
